A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

4 June 2026 2 Min Read

Tarot is one of the most powerful tools for self-reflection, spiritual guidance, and understanding the energies at play in your life. Dating back to the 15th century, tarot cards have evolved from simple playing cards into a profound system of archetypal symbolism that speaks to the deepest layers of the human psyche.

What Is Tarot?

A standard tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into two main groups: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Each card carries specific symbols, imagery, and meanings that, when interpreted together in a spread, can offer insight into your past, present, and potential future.

Tarot does not predict a fixed future. Rather, it reflects the energies and patterns currently in motion — giving you the awareness to make conscious choices and navigate your path with greater clarity.

“The tarot is a picture book of the story of ourselves — our archetypes, our challenges, our gifts, and our highest potential.”

The Major Arcana

The 22 Major Arcana cards represent the major life themes, spiritual lessons, and archetypal forces that shape human experience. From The Fool (new beginnings, pure potential) to The World (completion, mastery), each card marks a stage in the soul’s journey.

When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it signals that something of significant importance is at play — a turning point, a karmic lesson, or a powerful spiritual force.

The Minor Arcana

The 56 Minor Arcana cards are divided into four suits, each governing a different aspect of daily life:

  • Wands — Fire energy, passion, creativity, ambition
  • Cups — Water energy, emotions, relationships, intuition
  • Swords — Air energy, intellect, conflict, truth
  • Pentacles — Earth energy, material world, finances, body

How to Begin Your Practice

Starting a tarot practice doesn’t require years of study. Begin simply:

  1. Choose a deck that resonates with you visually and intuitively
  2. Spend time with each card individually before reading full spreads
  3. Keep a tarot journal to record your readings and reflections
  4. Start with single-card daily draws before moving to larger spreads
  5. Trust your intuition — the cards are a mirror, not a rulebook

The most important thing is to approach tarot with an open heart and a genuine desire for self-understanding. The cards meet you where you are.
